Symantec’s range of anti-malware products has constantly been losing popularity due to its excessive load on the system with some users going as far as calling Norton Antivirus itself as a virus. But now with its 2009 range of products, Symantec seeks to win back some of its long lost customers.
The previous versions of Norton were bloatwares which tended to bog down even the fastest of computers. But Symantec has learnt from its mistakes and has released Norton Antivirus 2009 as well as Norton Internet Security 2009 with maximum focus on “Zero Impact”.
Symantec says they have focused on improving speed, lowering memory use, and faster installation times for the newest version of Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security. Increasing complaints prompted the redesign, as many antivirus products grew in size as other vendors added features such as spyware and firewalls in recent years.
Symantec claims that the 2009 range of antivirus:
- uses only about 7 MB of memory, or one tenth that of competing products
- installs in less than a minute without any need for a reboot
- uses a whitelist that will remove the need to scan common operating system and known “clean” files
- delivers new signatures and definitions every five to fifteen minutes.
Initial reviews on the internet seem to suggest that the Company’s claims does have substance and the impact on the system is indeed minimal. If that is the case, then it may not be long before Symantec regains the supremacy & popularity it enjoyed a long time ago.
