RSS feeds is an efficient way to check for news and updates to your favourite websites, without having to visit each site individually. In this article, we compare the various RSS readers and try to determine the best way to read your subscribed RSS feeds.
RSS Readers are primarily divided into two types: Web based and Desktop.
Web-Based Readers
The most commonly known web-based aggregators are reader applications on the web. These are hosted on remote servers. The most popular web based RSS reader is Google Reader but there are a few others as well such as Bloglines. Because the application is available via the web, it can be accessed anywhere by a user with an Internet connection.
Desktop Readers
On the other hand, desktop RSS readers are installed applications designed to collect RSS feeds to your local computer so that they can be even accessed offline. If you have Microsoft Outlook 2007 installed on your computer, you already have a Desktop RSS Reader and can start aggregating your subscribed RSS feeds right inside Outlook.
The Best Way – Web based or Desktop ?
While Desktop readers are easier & faster to use, they are the best used when you are accessing your RSS feeds from a single computer. However, if you access your RSS feeds from home and office on separate computers, then using Desktop RSS readers can be a pain as the feeds won’t synchronise between your multiple computers.
