You have decided to start a new hobby or career in blogging and cannot decide which blogging tool to use. Your most likely options are Blogger and WordPress. So which one do you go with.
If you are absolutely new to blogging and do not have your own domain and webspace, select Blogger. However if you are a slightly advanced blogger and have your own domain and webspace, select WordPress. WordPress comes in 2 versions: one is the basic version wordpress.com while the more advanced version which you can install on your own webhost can be downloaded from wordpress.org. The version I am recommending for advanced users is the downloadable version from wordpress.org
You can read a complete comparison of these 2 services elsewhere on the web. But instead of confusing you with too many things, I will keep the comparison simple.
- Blogger offers more out of the box themes for your blog compared to WordPress’s basic wordpress.com. However you cannot install any customised themes for either Blogger or WordPress.com. If you need to use your own theme or use one of thousands of such themes available on the net, you need to use WordPress.org on your own server.
- If you do not have your own webhost but have your own domain name, then Blogger allows you to map your domain to your Blogger account for free!! WordPress.com will charge you $10 per year to map your domain to your basic wordpress blog. In the case of WordPress.org, you can only install it if you have your own webspace with PHP/MySQL support.
- WordPress.org will allow you maximum & complete customisation of your blog. With Blogger and WordPress.com you don’t have any customisation options as the scripts run on their servers.
The choice is clear. WordPress.com (the basic version) is not worth considering.
Its Blogger for the newbies and WordPress.org for the advanced users !
